Updates fix problems and keep your stick safe. Your stick may do it by itself, but checking only takes a minute.
1

Press the Home button

On your Fire TV remote, find the button with a small picture of a house. Press it once. The main Fire TV screen appears. If you ever feel lost, this button always brings you back here.
2

Open Settings

Press the right side of the round ring on your remote until you reach the small gear picture on the top row. Then press the middle of the ring. This middle button is called Select, and it works like “OK”.
3

Open My Fire TV

Press the arrows on the ring to find My Fire TV, then press Select. On some newer software, this is called Device & Software. Both names lead to the same place.
4

Open About

Press the down arrow until About is highlighted. Highlighted means it looks brighter than the others. Then press Select.
5

Choose Check for Updates

Move to Check for Updates, or Install Update. Press Select. The stick looks online for a new version.
6

Read the message

If it says you are up to date, you are finished. Press Home. If an update is available, choose Install Update.
7

Wait, and do not unplug

The stick restarts and shows a progress bar. This can take ten minutes or longer. Please do not unplug it during this time. It is a good moment for a cup of tea.
8

Check that it finished

Once the Home screen returns, open your TV app and try a channel. Some menus may look a little different. That is normal.
9

If the update fails

The most common reason is a lack of space. Follow our guide on freeing up storage, restart your stick, then try again.
