Learn 6 steps

A speed test takes about 30 seconds and costs nothing. It tells you how fast your internet really is where you are sitting.
1

Go to the TV

Stand or sit beside the TV where you watch. A test next to your internet box tells you much less.
2

Connect your phone to Wi-Fi

Check for the Wi-Fi symbol at the top of your phone’s screen. Connect to the same network as your TV. If you test on mobile data, the result means nothing.
3

Open a speed test website

Open your web browser, and go to fast.com. This free site starts testing by itself. Or use another well-known test, such as Speedtest.
4

Wait for the result

Wait until the number stops changing. This number is your download speed, in Mbps.
5

Read the result

Under 15 Mbps may struggle with HD. From 25 Mbps, you should be fine for one 4K picture. For several screens, you want more.
6

Test again in the evening

Your speed may drop at busy times, like 8 PM. Test then as well. Write down both numbers, if you plan to ask for help.
