What Is an EPG? The IPTV TV Guide Explained

Learn 6 steps

EPG means electronic program guide. What it does, why it can be empty while channels play, and how it updates.

EPG is simply a technical name for the TV guide, the screen showing what is on now and later.
1

What you see

The guide looks like a grid. Channels are listed on the left, and times run across the top. It works much like a printed TV guide used to.
2

How to open it

Most apps have a TV Guide or EPG option in their menu. Some remotes have a Guide button. Our guide for your app shows where it is.
3

Where it comes from

The guide is a separate file that your app downloads. It is not part of the video. So your channels can play perfectly while the guide stays empty.
4

Why it can take a while

The first download can take a few minutes. Your app then updates it every so often. If it is empty on your first day, give it some time.
5

Why some channels are blank

Some overseas and smaller channels have no listings. That does not mean the channel is broken. It simply has no schedule available.
6

If everything is blank

See our guide “TV Guide Empty? How to Fix It”. It is usually a quick fix.
