Mobile data is the internet you get from your phone company. Video uses more of it than anything else, so a little planning avoids surprise charges.
Start
Know the numbers
HD video uses about 3 GB per hour, and 4K about 7 GB per hour. A two-hour game in HD comes to about 6 GB. Many phone plans include only a limited amount.
Check your plan
Your phone company’s app or bill shows your monthly amount. Ask them if you are not sure. Some “unlimited” plans slow down after a set amount.
Check how much you have used
Open your phone’s Settings, then look for Network or Connections, then Data Usage. You can see your use this month.
Set a warning
In the same area, you can set a warning or a limit. Set one a little below your plan’s amount. Your phone will alert you.
Choose a lower quality
If a channel comes in SD or HD versions, choose SD on your phone. On a small screen, the difference is often hard to notice. It uses far less data.
Use Wi-Fi when you can
At home and at family members’ homes, connect to Wi-Fi first. Check for the Wi-Fi symbol at the top of your screen before you start watching.
Final step
Stay safe on the road
Never watch while driving. If you are the driver, park first.
