Amazon sells two kinds of Fire TV Stick, and they look alike. One kind can install the TV apps in our guides, and the other cannot. This quick check tells you which you have.

Start

Press the Home button

On your Fire TV remote, find the button with a small picture of a house. Press it once. The main Fire TV screen appears. If you ever feel lost, this button always brings you back here.

Open Settings

Press the right side of the round ring on your remote until you reach the small gear picture on the top row. Then press the middle of the ring. This middle button is called Select, and it works like “OK”.

Open My Fire TV

Press the arrows on the ring to find My Fire TV, then press Select. On some newer software, this is called Device & Software. Both names lead to the same place.

Open About

Press the down arrow until About is highlighted. Highlighted means it looks brighter than the others. Then press Select.

Read the model and software

The name of your device appears at the top. Look further down for the words Fire OS. If you see Fire OS, you are in luck, and our Downloader guides will work for you.

If you have a newer stick

The Fire TV Stick 4K Select from 2025 and the Fire TV Stick HD from 2026 are reported to use Vega OS. Those sticks cannot install apps from outside Amazon’s own store, so Downloader will not work on them.

What to do with a Vega stick

You still have good options. Look in Amazon’s store for a TV player, or use an app on your Smart TV. Please do not pay for anyone’s tool that claims to “unlock” your stick. It may be unsafe.

If you are about to buy one

Ask for a stick running Fire OS, such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus or 4K Max, and check the product page. If a store cannot confirm this, ask us before you pay. This check can save you a trip back.

Final step

Still need help?

That is completely fine. Not sure which stick you have? Send us a photo of the About screen. Message us on WhatsApp or by email, any day from 6 AM to 11 PM Eastern Time. Tell us your device and what you see on the screen. A photo of the TV screen helps a lot.
