An Ethernet cable connects your stick directly to your internet box, so walls and neighbours’ Wi-Fi no longer matter. It can do more than a faster plan.
Start
Check whether it is possible
You need your internet box near the TV, or a network socket in the wall. If your box is far away, a long flat cable can run along the wall. If that is not possible, ask us about other options.
Buy the right adapter
Look for an Ethernet adapter made for your Fire TV Stick. Amazon sells one, and other brands make them too. Tell the store your exact stick model, because the connectors differ.
Buy a network cable
You also need an Ethernet cable long enough to reach your internet box. It looks like a thick phone cord with a wide clip at each end. Cables are inexpensive.
Unplug the stick’s power
Pull the power cable out of the side of your stick. You do not need to remove it from the TV.
Connect the adapter
Plug the adapter into the stick where the power cable was. Then plug the power cable into the adapter.
Connect the network cable
Push one end of the cable into the adapter, until it clicks. Push the other end into a free socket on your internet box. Sockets are often labelled LAN, or numbered.
Check the connection
Wait for the stick to start. Press Home, then go to Settings, then Network. You should see Connected, with a mention of Ethernet or Wired.
Final step
Test a channel
Open your TV app and watch something in the evening, when problems are usually at their worst. Many people find their freezing goes away at this step.
