This takes about ten minutes, and you cannot break anything. Have your Wi-Fi name and password nearby before you start.

Start

Unpack the box

Inside you will find the stick, the remote, a power cable, a power plug and two small batteries. You may also find a short cable called an HDMI extender. Keep it, as it often helps.

Find an HDMI port on your TV

Look at the back or the side of your TV. An HDMI port is a thin, flat slot, wider at the top than at the bottom. It usually has the word HDMI and a number beside it. Remember the number.

Plug the stick into the TV

Push the stick gently into the HDMI port. It fits only one way, so do not force it. If space is tight, plug the short extender cable into the TV first, then plug the stick into the extender.

Connect the power

Plug the small end of the power cable into the side of the stick, then plug the power plug into a wall outlet. Use the wall outlet, not the TV’s USB port, because the TV’s port is often too weak.

Turn on the TV and choose the input

Turn on your TV with its own remote. Press the button called Input or Source, then choose the HDMI number you remembered. After a moment, the Fire TV screen appears. See our guide on the TV’s HDMI input if it does not.

Put the batteries in the remote

Slide the back cover off the Fire TV remote and put in the two batteries. Match the plus and minus signs. The remote should connect by itself. If asked, hold the Home button for about ten seconds.

Final step

Follow the instructions on screen

The stick asks you to choose your language, then your Wi-Fi network. Type your Wi-Fi password, then sign in to an Amazon account. You can create a free account on your phone if you do not have one. You are done.
